Sekian. Terimakasih.

Abg Johari on salient points of becoming winnable candidates
Posted on September 25, 2011, Sunday

KUCHING: Experience and expertise in niche fields will score big points for individuals who aspire to be picked for the next general election, said PBB deputy president Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg yesterday.

Approached by reporters covering the PBB Satok Hari Raya gathering on Friday evening, he stressed that selecting candidates for every election required a holistic approach.

“Restricting the policy would in fact do more harm than good to the people,” he said when asked to comment whether the practice of choosing ‘parachute’ candidates should continue.

On Thursday, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad suggested that the BN should continue to nominate `parachute’ candidates from among the highly educated and professionally experienced as the practice is still suitable in the current political scenario.

Abang Johari added that it was also very important that the candidates nominated must have the ability to support government policies and shoulder new policies well.

“Just look at Aidel Lariwoo. He is an engineer with JKR before winning the state election in Sadong Jaya,” he said, adding that Aidel’s expertise would come in useful for infrastructure development in the constituency.

But Abang Johari kept his lips sealed when asked whether PBB would be fielding `parachute’ candidates in the 13th general election.

On the state cabinet reshuffle which is expected to be announced sometime next

week, Abang Johari said he believed the new economic phenomena and diversifications happening in the state would be a major factor in picking the new lineup.

In any case, he pointed out, the lineup is the prerogative of Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

“I believe he (Taib) has in mind new approaches and new ways to manage the state in view of the influx of development that is projected to take place in the state from now till 2030.

“We will have new industries and a new social scene … everything will change,” he said, with apparent reference to the coming of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).

One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of prizes to winners of the ‘Pesta Bertuntung Satok-Berita Harian 2011’.

Another was the allocation of RM55,000 to SMK Merpati Jepang to air-conditioned its school hall as it is often used to hold wedding functions.

Abang Johari also revealed that a vacant piece of land near the former suspension bridge had been earmarked for the construction of a multipurpose hall for use by nearby residents.
