KUCHING: Par t i Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) is currently analysing the performance of its Members of Parliament to determine if any of them needs to be replaced for the coming parliamentary election.
“If there is the need to replace some of them, then we will have new faces,” PBB Senior Vice- President Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hasan (pic) told the media at the Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri held at his residence at Jalan Kedandi, Tabuan Jaya here Wednesday night.
Tengah was asked by the media whether there would be new faces from PBB in the coming parliamentary election.
“The time will come when we have to decide. In every election, there will be new faces from PBB.
All the new faces will be younger and from professional groups.
This is one way for us to retain leadership quality and ensure the continuity in our leadership hierarchy,” he said.
On the Chief Minister ’s son, Dato Sri Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib’s interest to replace his younger brother Dato Sri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib in the coming parliamenatry election, Tengah said he would be happy if Bekir was seriously interested.
“I am happy for all these young people with enough experience and knowledge, and what more to say for Dato Sri Mahmud (Abu Bekir), who is from a very experienced family with political background. So I am very happy for that,” Tengah said.
Meanwhile, Chief Political Secretary to the Chief Minister Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, when asked for his comment on Abu Bekir, also echoed similar opinion.
“It is good to see young people having interest in politics, but we leave that to the party to decide and it is not for me to determine who should be the candidates.
“But I believe that whoever is going to contest in an area, he or she has to be a winnable candidate.
And the other thing is that he or she must be accepted by the people on the ground,” said Karim, adding that normally, the party would first make the assessment whether the person was acceptable or not.
“But as far as I am concerned, if he (Abu Bekir) is there we will give him our full support. If he is endorsed by the party and the Barisan Nasional (BN), we will assist and give him full support.
There should not be a problem because the area (Samarahan constituency) has always been a strong hold of the BN,” he said.
Karim said if Abu Bekir was ready and the people accepted him, then he should be given all the blessings.
“The normal procedure is, anybody going to contest will definitely have to have the support of the grassroots leaders, because even if you are popular elsewhere, you may not be able to win in another area.So you have to be accepted in that area,” he explained.
He said that from his (Abu Bekir’s) recent statement, he indicated his interest in politics.
“I am getting some feedback also from the ground.I don’t see any problem. If the party endorses him, we will go all out for him whether in Samarahan or Mukah,” said Karim.
“The opposition can say anything.
No matter how good we have performed in our areas, they will always say that we are not good.As far as I am concerned, there is no problem down there and the people are happy. This was reflected in the last state election. If we were no good, they would have not given us good support because our winning majorities were quite substantial,” he added.
